"In September 2008 - when in New York - I had surgery to remove a prolapsed disk from between two of my lumbar vertebrae. A year later a magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed that other disks were disintegrating and that several of the spinal nerves supplying my legs were under threat. I was advised to prepare for major surgery to rebuild my back. I was also advised to start exercices that would strengthen the core muscules of my trunk- particulary Pilates and swimming. By that time I had returned to work in Geneva.
Some weeks later I went to a biking class in the Silhouette Gym in Versoix and found about Pilates sessions offered by Muriel. At the biginning I found the discipline of managed breathing and controlled movement quite difficult. And i am very impatient. "how long will it be before I notice a difference?" I asked. " You will certainly notice a difference after 10 sessions, and you will feel as though you have a new body after 20" was the answer, or that is how I remember it.
I am now coming up to my 30th one hour session over 8 months, and I really do notice the difference. Much less back pain, and when do have it, things settle after a Pilates session. I seem to be able to manage my back better through the way I handle my trunk and my breathing. I feel different, sit differently and - provided I am not tired- walk like a different person.
Muriel is a patient instructor, but rigourous (ensuring that the technique is always right), thorough (with an ever increasing repertoire of exercises), careful (checking to see that the back is really being supported and not embarrassed by her programme) and fun to be with. She has an extraordinary memory of the people and places we gossip about I push the bar and stimulate rhythmic from springs on the Pilates table.
This has been, and continues to be, a really valuable investment in me. I want to find time for about 3 sessions a month to maintain the improvement. I see a real contribution to the stability of my trunk and the well-being of my long-suffering back".
